Nintendo Wii...

Alrite...lets move on to Nintendo Wii since i've posted Ps3 and Xbox 360...haha

The Wii is Nintendo's smallest home console to date; it measures 44 mm (1.73 in) wide, 157 mm (6.18 in) tall and 215.4 mm (8.48 in) deep in its vertical orientation, the near-equivalent of three DVD cases stacked together. The included stand measures 55.4 mm (2.18 in) wide, 44 mm (1.73 in) tall and 225.6 mm (8.88 in) deep. The system weighs 1.2 kg (2.7 lb), which makes it the lightest of the three major seventh generation consoles. The console can be placed either horizontally or vertically. The prefix for the numbering scheme of the system and its parts and accessories is "RVL-" after its project code name of "Revolution". The console also features a recurring theme or design: the console itself, SD cards, the power supply and all the sockets have one of their corners chipped off in a triangular fashion.

The front of the console features an illuminated slot-loading optical media drive that accepts both 12 cm Wii Optical Discs and Nintendo GameCube Game Discs. The blue light in the disc slot illuminates briefly when the console is turned on and pulsates when new data is received through WiiConnect24. After firmware update 3.0, the disc slot light activates whenever a Wii disc is inserted or ejected. When there is no WiiConnect24 information, the light stays off. The disc slot light remains off during gameplay or when using other features. Two USB ports are located at its rear. An SD card slot hides behind the cover on the front of the console. The SD card can be used for uploading photos as well as backing up saved game data and downloaded Virtual Console games. To use the SD slot for transferring game saves, an update must be installed. An installation can be initiated from the Wii options menu through an Internet connection, or by inserting a game disc containing the updated firmware. Virtual Console data cannot be restored to any system except the unit of origin. An SD card can also be used to create customized in-game music from stored MP3 files, as first shown in Excite Truck, as well as music for the slideshow feature of the Photo Channel. Version 1.1 of the Photo Channel removed MP3 playback in favor of AAC support.

Nintendo has shown the console and the Wii Remote in white, black, silver, lime green, and red,but it is currently available only in white. Shigeru Miyamoto stated that other colors would become available after the easing of supply limitations.

The Wii launch package includes the console, a stand to allow the console to be placed vertically, a circular clear stabilizer for the main stand, one Wii Remote, one Nunchuk attachment, one Sensor Bar, a removable stand for the bar, one external main power adapter, two AA batteries, one composite AV cable with RCA connectors, a SCART adapter in European countries (component video and other types of cables are available separately), operation documentation, and, in all regions except Japan and South Korea, a copy of the game Wii Sports.

The Wii can be hacked to enable an owner to use the console for activities other than those intended by Nintendo.Several brands of modchips are available for the Wii.

Nintendo plans to release a version of the console with DVD-Video playback capabilities. This new model will use the CinePlayer CE DVD Navigator software engine by Sonic Solutions. Although software will be used to enable DVD-Video functionality, Nintendo has stated that it "requires more than a firmware upgrade" to implement and that the functionality would be unavailable as an upgrade option for the existing Wii model. After announcing the DVD version for 2007, Nintendo delayed its release to focus on producing the original console to meet demand.

The Wii (top) compared in size to the GCN, N64, North American SNES and NES

The Wii Remote is the primary controller for the console. It uses a combination of built-in accelerometers and infrared detection to sense its position in 3D space when pointed at the LEDs within the Sensor Bar. This design allows users to control the game using physical gestures as well as traditional button presses. The controller connects to the console using Bluetooth and features rumble as well as an internal speaker. The Wii Remote can connect to other devices through a proprietary port at the base of the controller. The device bundled with the Wii retail package is the Nunchuk unit, which features an accelerometer and a traditional analog stick with two trigger buttons. In addition, an attachable wrist strap can be used to prevent the player from unintentionally dropping or throwing the Wii Remote. In response to incidents of strap failure, Nintendo is offering a free, stronger replacement for all straps. Nintendo has also since offered the Wii Remote Jacket to provide extra grip and protection.

Wii Menu

The Wii Menu operating system interface is designed around the concept of television channels. Separate channels are graphically displayed in a grid and are navigated using the pointer capability of the Wii Remote. It is possible to change the arrangement of the channels by holding down the A and B buttons. There are six primary channels: the Disc Channel, Mii Channel, Photo Channel, Wii Shop Channel, Forecast Channel, and News Channel. The latter two were initially unavailable at launch, but activated through firmware updates. Additional channels are available for download from the Wii Shop Channel through WiiWare and also appear with each Virtual Console title. These include the Everybody Votes Channel, Internet Channel, Check Mii Out Channel, and the Nintendo Channel.

Nintendo DS connectivity

The Wii system supports wireless connectivity with the Nintendo DS without any additional accessories. This connectivity allows the player to use the Nintendo DS microphone and touchscreen as inputs for Wii games. The first example Nintendo has given of a game using Nintendo DS-Wii connectivity is that of Pokémon Battle Revolution. Players with either the Pokémon Diamond or Pearl Nintendo DS games are able to play battles using their Nintendo DS as a controller.Nintendo later released the Nintendo Channel, which allows Wii owners to download game demos or additional data to their Nintendo DS in a process similar to that of a DS Download Station. The console is also able to expand Nintendo DS games.

Reception

The system was well received after its exhibition at E3 2006. At the event, Nintendo's console won the Game Critics Awards for Best of Show and Best Hardware. In the December 2006 issue of Popular Science the console was awarded with the Grand Award Winner in Home Entertainment.Spike TV's Video Games Award also granted the console the award in breakthrough technology.GameSpot chose the console as the Best Hardware on their Best and Worst 2006 awards show. The system was also chosen as one of PC World magazine's 20 Most Innovative Products of the Year. The console received a Golden Joystick for Innovation of the Year 2007 at the Golden Joystick Awards. In the category of Engineering & Technology for Creation and Implementation of Video Games and Platforms, Nintendo was awarded an Emmy for Game Controller Innovation by The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

The worldwide success of the Wii has caught third party developers by surprise, leading to some apologizing for the quality of their early games. In an interview with German news magazine Der Spiegel, Ubisoft's Yves Guillemot and Alain Corre admitted that they had made a mistake in rushing out their launch titles, promising to take future projects more seriously. Take-Two Interactive, who released few games for the Nintendo GameCube, has changed its stance on Nintendo, putting a higher priority in developing for the Wii with Manhunt 2 being one of their first releases on the system.

At the same time, criticism of the Wii Remote and the Wii hardware specifications has surfaced. Former GameSpot editor Jeff Gerstmann stated that the controller's speaker produces low-quality sound, while Factor 5 President Julian Eggebrecht criticized the hardware audio as being substandard for a console of its generation. U.K.-based developer Free Radical Design stated that the Wii hardware lacks the power necessary to run the software it had scheduled for release on other seventh generation consoles. The online connectivity of the Wii was subject to criticism, as Matt Casamassina of IGN compared it to the "entirely unintuitive" service provided for the Nintendo DS.

An executive for Frontline Studios expressed that major publishers are wary of releasing exclusive titles for the console due to the perception that third-party companies are not strongly supported by consumers. In his blog, 1UP.com editor Jeremy Parish stated that Nintendo was the biggest disappointment for him in 2007. Commenting on the lack of quality third-party support, he stated that "the Wii landscape is bleak. Worse than it was on N64. Worse than on GameCube...the resulting third-party content is overwhelmingly bargain-bin trash."

Game designer and The Sims creator Will Wright shared his thoughts on the Wii within the context of the current console generation: "The only next gen system I've seen is the Wii – the PS3 and the Xbox 360 feel like better versions of the last, but pretty much the same game with incremental improvement. But the Wii feels like a major jump – not that the graphics are more powerful, but that it hits a completely different demographic."

Using the Wii is often seen as being more physically demanding than other game consoles. Some Wii players have occasionally experienced a form of tennis elbow referred to as "Wiiitis". A study published in the British Medical Journal states that Wii players use more energy than playing sedentary computer games. It is however indicated that while this energy increase may be beneficial to weight management, it is not an adequate replacement for regular exercise.

Hmm...i think tht's all bout the game console...i'll talk bout the games later on..
enjoy viewing it... =)

Another Cool Console.. PS3 !!

Moving on from the Xbox 360, lets look at the PS3.

First off, the machine is beautiful. It shiny, black and looks the part...word of advice though. Fingerprints pick up easily on the machine itself!

In my opinion, it is more beautiful then the 360. The buttons are touch sensitive! Trust me, its a marvel. In terms of size, its about the same as the 360..so no difference on that part.

One noticeable issue is, and I touched on this earlier on, is the noise. The PS3 is a lot quieter then its Microsoft counterpart. If your a noise freak it makes a difference! This in part also shows, or rather feels, the difference in how much heat the machine gives out. The PS3 feels a lot cooler in general.

Perhaps in part its because of the power connection. The 360 has got a huge power adapter (and I mean HUGE) which connects to the wall socket. The PS3 power connector is pretty much the same as the PS2. I don't know how they have done this but you notice the difference.

Due to the size of the power adapter (and how hot that too gets), I rest it on a cardboard shoe box to help release the heat. Should you invest in a 360, I strongly advise you do this!

However, Sony have not only kept their power source cable the same but also their television connection the same! The socket at the back of the PS3 is the same as that of the PS2. Its a shame because its all a standard connection and you have to go out to either buy a component cable, or HDMI. Giving that it is next-gen, you would expect Sony to at least put a next-generation cable in!

Moving on though, lets look at the controller.
Its really not that different from the PS2 controller. The buttons at the back (L2/R2) are quite deep in thats the biggest difference. There are also lights to indicate which controller is which (first, second, third, fourth).
One gripe about the controller is the rear buttons are TOO deep. After extended play it feels like your fingers are sliding off or you think you fully depressing the button when your not.

Another issue I have with it is the power source. The wii and 360 use battery power the keep the controller going. You will never need to buy a new controller unless you smash it. Also for the 360 (and im sure in time the wii) you can buy the rechargeable kit, as I touched on earlier.

The PS3 is much different, and dare I say it, a money making scheme! You cannot unplug a battery pack from that. The only way to charge it is via the USB port on your PS3 or computer.
Should you buy a new controller you also don't get a USB wire as well! Either use the one you get with the console or buy a new one! Should both controllers run out of juice at the same time, take your pick of which one to plug into the console! (note; there are multiple USB ports on the PS3!)

The much hyped 'motion sensor control' (called Sixaxis) to be honest isn't that great...yet. No game has fully utilized it but their are games that 'promise' to make use of it. The Wii on the other hand is a different ball game. With the Wii, swing to the left and it goes left etc.
The PS3 controller detects six different movements, thereby you get the name SixAxis, up, down, left, right forward and backwards. Trust me when I say the Wii works better!

Ok, enough about looking at the machine, what about the console menu etc?
It is a wonder to look at. Its slick. Its beautiful.

For all those out there with a PSP, well the PS3 menu is similar (almost identical..but a lot clearer!) Small little things do make a difference, such as when you set your PS3 clock, if it is night time the background will be dark and in the day time bright. Slicker then the 360.

Thus far the graphics are amazing but not on par with Gears of Wars, the benchmark for all consoles. If you really had money to burn you could buy games for both consoles (Tiger Woods, Fight Night 3, Call of Duty 3 etc) and compare but I advise you not too!

To be honest, as with the 360, time has to be given to the developers. Gran Tursimo HD (a free download) is awesome but I can't wait for the full version to launch next year. The PS3 is still a baby and sooner or later a game will come out to push the limits of its graphics. Once again, I can only stress how important a High Def T.V is (LCD is your best bet). Be it a small one, say 19inch, or 40 inch. You will never, and some games really look bad to the point where you can't read text, on an average television for both consoles.

More on the topic of games. One thing, although to be honest not really applicable in Malaysia because of piracy, is the PS3 abilities to play older games. I know this much, when the PS3 was still being developed, it was claimed ALL PS1 and PS2 questions could be played on the PS3. Sony have recently come out to say that actually its only (give or take) a 1000 games that can be played back. Still, its pretty impressive.

Their are only a handful of the original Xbox games that can be played (big ones like Halo 2 etc) so from the get-go, you already have quite a large collection of games to play just not next-gen ones. Remember, when the 360 launched, the games were not that great either, nor were there many! Give it time! A lot of people are writing the PS3 off already but expect a vicious bite when it returns.

Like I said, the PS3 has got HUGE potential. For online play, although currently nothing compared to Xbox Live, it is free and the PS3 contains inbuilt wi-fi. This is great as long as your connection is good enough and you don't want a mess of wires littering your room. It even has a memory card reader (not just limited to the Sony memory stick anymore! Play music from PSP or view pictures!)

Ok, this write up is long enough...next up Ill touch on games. Im feeling lazy to write about the Wii! Its too different from the big gun of 360 and PS3!

Cool Gaming Console ...XBox 360!!

Video game consoles! Ill attempt to make this as 'in-depth' as possible.

I've been lucky to be able to purchase all 3, so lets start at the 1st one I got.

The XBOX 360!

Very nice to look at I must admit!

Ill admit, the PS2 kicked ass over the original Xbox! The games were immense on the PS2 and to be honest, all the Xbox has was Halo. How times have changed.

When I got the console, I noticed how much of an improvement it was over the previous generation. I love the fact (and its the same with all next-gen consoles) you can turn on, and off, the console with the remote. Very useful if your a lazy bugger like me :p

The controller fits snuggly into your hands, and one plus point over the ps3, is that it is battery operated. You can either
a) use normal AA battery which you buy or

b) use the rechargeable battery kit. Each charger kit can fit two rechargeable batteries at the same time so thats very useful as well.

When u press the big 'x button' on the controller, you can also access the main console menu, sign into your profiles, switch on/off the console and also view how much battery power you have left.

The main Xbox 360 menu is also very slick, although the PS3 one does look slicker (PS3 menu is just like the PSP one!)

What about the hardware itself?

To be honest, its too soon to say. Im sure you've heard about the wonders of Gears Of Wars, and whilst it is visually AMAZING, deep down inside me I keep thinking that something better will come sooner or later once game developers can fully harness the power within the machine.

In aspect to that, its even more apparent for the PS3 with not that many games out...yet. Right now I find the Xbox 360 more visually pleasing, but its has been out an entire year longer then the PS3, and it took one year for Gears Of Wars to come out. Give the PS3 time and one game should be released that can challenge Gears, only time will tell.

Remember, the Xbox 360's launch titles were not that great either!

Something that annoys me about the 360 though is how loud the machine can get You get the impression that the internal fan is really suffering inside the machine! Compared to the PS3, it sounds like a monster truck (ok..I exaggerate a bit..) but the PS3 is very quiet.

I also worry more with the Xbox 360 overheating then the PS3 so I invested in a 'fan-platform'. It cools the machine whilst holding it in place which is very useful.

What you see above is one of the awesome accessories you can purchase for the 360.
That is the Xbox Live Vision camera. Supposing you download one of the games available online (like UNO), you can put that on and see yourself on screen, and the other you are playing online. Very cool! In one specific game, Rainbow Six Vegas, you can take a picture of your face and 'map' it onto your game character!

One thing which the 360 dominates on is their online action. This, is simply put, amazing. It adds entire new dimensions to your game. Bored or finished with the story mode? Log on, and blast your way through some mates online.

Xbox has a huge advantage over the PS3 in that their online play was implemented with their original console, and it proved popular even then. They have had years to develop it. PS3, if wise, should stick the basics shows on the 360 if they want to combat that.

Take note that online isn't just for downloading games. You can download add-ons for your games, patches, updates and so forth. Game demos are also available.

If you wanted to be really cunning, you create another account (done by setting up a new Hotmail Account) but registered in the States. This is done so, your main account, will be 'registered in Singapore' (technically speaking...Xbox live isn't available here...) for gaming. This way you don't acquire much lag because your more likely to connected to local servers...not American ones.

The American one is for downloads only available in the States. Every day, more and more are added. Movies...tv shows and so forth. The best part is, the movies are HD! If you have a 360, or PS3, its advisable to buy a HD (high definition) tv to fully enjoy the graphics. Although we don't have HD-DVDs, you can still download the HD movies!

On both accounts though, you can also download 'arcade games', Mortal Kombat, Street-Fighter etc. Every month, more and more are added and I must admit, they are rather fun!

Ah but then comes the question of price.

To be honest, its alright. Anybody can log, and create, an Xbox Live account. To play online though, you have to pay. For those without credit cards, you can pop to your local gameshop and purchase a 'top-up' card. 3 months will set you back about RM80. I find it more worthwhile to purchase a one year card for about RM199, but since its so worthwhile, you may find it hard to find!
Compare this price with that of World of Warcraft, you do save quite a bit more! Once you can pay that, you can play online with any of your games.

There are also Microsoft Points. These are needed to download the arcade games, movies and anything thing else that charges. You usually get a 1600 point card for about rm80. To download an arcade game will set you back about 300-500 points, so even though I don't buy much stuff in the market place, its nice to have the points just in case.

Don't worry, no points are needed to play online games (only the membership fee which I mentioned before - the 'top up' card). Just top up your account and you become an xbox live gold member.

The PS3 beats the 360 in one aspect of online play though..its 100 % free. With the exception of downloading movies etc, you can play any game you buy online. With this you certainly save money!

Should the PS3 online take off though, I wouldn't be surprised if a fee is charged, but with (apparently) close to a million people, extra, creating xbox live accounts following the release of Gears of Wars, you'll never be short of gamers to play with!

By the way, if you don't like wires, you can buy the 'wi-fi' add on for the 360. The PS3 though, only the 60 gig version, has inbuilt wi-fi! I've never liked wi-fi too much to be honest, so I tend to stick to my ethernet cables.
